The past few weeks have been heartbreaking for many residents of Colorado as they deal with the devastating flash floods and flooding that have plagued their neighborhoods. At least six people have lost their lives; hundreds are still missing and unaccounted for. Hundreds of homes and businesses have been destroyed or damaged. And at least 4500 square acres over 17 counties have been affected.
As the floodwaters begin to recede, it becomes evident that there is a lot of work to be done for the residents of Colorado who have been affected by the recent flooding.
Many remain homeless; not knowing whether their home is still standing or what the damage their homes will be when they are allowed to return. Some are dealing with no electricity, plumbing or phone service. Others are beginning to assess and clean up the damage to their homes and businesses. Many will not be covered by their homeowners’ insurance policy.
So what can you do to help? The Bendinelli Law Firm is proud to announce their partnership with Fox 31 KDVR, The Red Cross and Community Food Share to help raise funds for victims of the Colorado floods. Traumatic brain injuries usually result from a violent jolt to the head or body that causes short-term or permanent serious damage to the victim’s brain cells. The degree of damage and medical symptoms depend on the force of impact, and traumatic brain injuries may be caused by everything from auto accidents to slip and falls to sports mishaps. Here are the answers to some commonly asked questions about this serious personal injury.
What Defines a Traumatic Brain Injury?
A traumatic brain injury, or TBI, refers to significant damage to the brain tissue that occurs after a violent collision or when an object pierces the skull. Traumatic brain injuries are medically classified by their moderate, mild, or severe symptoms, but all TBIs cause very serious and often irreversible damage.
What Causes a Traumatic Brain Injury?
Traumatic brain injuries may be caused by falls, auto accidents, explosive blasts, or sports accidents. Even seemingly minor slip and falls that occur on another person’s property, in a public place, or when an employee is on the job may result in a TBI. While some signs or symptoms manifest immediately after the event, others do not appear until days or even weeks later.
What Are the Different Types of Injury?
After a mild TBI, an accident victim may experience memory problems, nausea or vomiting, mood swings, blurred vision, depression or anxiety, and difficulty sleeping. A moderate TBI may include loss of consciousness from several minutes to several hours, profound confusion, slurred speech, loss of coordination, and seizures. Symptoms of a severe TBI can include of these symptoms in addition to the inability to fully awaken from sleep and more severe psychological or behavioral issues.

Punitive damages, or exemplary damages, refer to a court-ordered financial penalty that is intended to punish a defendant’s behavior and deter others from engaging in similar conduct in the future. In a personal injury case, punitive damages are awarded in addition to actual damages that may be allocated for a victim’s medical expenses, missed work, and pain and suffering. Punitive damages are intended to recognize gross negligence or an egregious wrong perpetrated by a person, group of persons, or entity, and may be assigned after an auto accident, truck accident, or workplace injury.
If you have been in a truck or accident, a slip and fall, or are the victim of medical malpractice, you may be entitled to compensation.
